On June 17th (Monday), Catholic Metaversity (CU12), a consortium comprising all Catholic universities in Korea, celebrated its first anniversary with the "Next Three Decades Future University Forum: Shaping the Era of Shared Universities and Innovating Education." Having been founded with an orientation toward 'Metaversity,' CU12 reviewed its achievements over the past year and explored future directions through deep discussions with domestic and international experts.

Dean Bon-man Gu of CU12, in his opening remarks, emphasized, "Innovation is becoming integral to Korean culture, and practical implementation of changes is crucial." He expressed confidence that "today's forum on the future of innovative education at shared universities will lead the way in university innovation."

Chairman Kyung-wan Hong of the Association of Korean Catholic University Presidents (also President of Catholic University of Busan) welcomed attendees, noting, "As we enter an era dominated by digital and AI technologies, education stands at its forefront." He hoped that "the Future University Forum, hosted by CU12, will provoke meaningful reflections on what constitutes genuine innovative education."

The anniversary celebration included congratulatory messages from participating university presidents and supportive messages from CU Heroes, CU12's official supporters. The first session featured a keynote address by Professor Jae-hwa Choi from George Washington University on "The Age of Digital Transformation: Navigating the Future Directions of Higher Education," offering fresh insights into integrating generative AI, ChatGPT, and other digital technologies into education.

In the second session, discussions were led by Sang-hyun Jang, Director of KERIS Center, and Professor Won-jae Lee from KAIST on "Future Directions for Online Higher Education," focusing on strategies to enhance the brand value of shared universities and ensure their distinctiveness through active use of edutech. Following this, research presentations by Professor Bok-hee Choi from Catholic University and Professor Dam-i Bang examined student and faculty attitudes towards online classes, addressing student expectations and faculty challenges at shared universities.

In its inaugural year of 2023, CU12 opened a total of 69 courses, and 5,681 students enrolled in these courses, with an average course evaluation score exceeding 90 points, demonstrating high student satisfaction. It also organized 13 extracurricular programs based on its identified five core competencies, which garnered high interest, with 538 students participating. For this spring semester, 38 courses were offered with 4,504 students enrolled, solidifying CU12's position as a preferred platform for educational innovation among students.

Dean Bon-man Gu concluded, "The 'Next Three Decades Future University Forum' will become an annual event, reflecting innovations proposed for liberal arts education courses and ensuring that CU12 evolves into an innovative future university that shares high-quality liberal arts education." He expressed plans for future expansion involving more universities, aiming to develop into a 'future-oriented metaversity' that provides accessible comprehensive education for all. Dean Gu asked for continued interest in and support for the development of CU12.
